Yadichinma Ukoha Kalu
Yadichinma Ukoha-Kalu is a self-taught experimental artist and illustrator based in Lagos. Her artistic practice centers on the exploration of line, form, space, and boundaries, expressed through a wide range of media including painting, drawing, sculpture, film, and digital platforms. She continuously constructs multidimensional environments that merge abstract elements, textures, and materials, generating dynamic interactions within her work.
With a career spanning over five years, Yadichinma has collaborated successfully with artists and institutions both locally and internationally. She has participated in simultaneous residencies in South Africa and Dubai, experiences that have enriched her creative journey. In 2018, she was commissioned by the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) in Cape Town, where her work featured prominently as part of the Grow Box project. In 2021, she was highlighted as a featured artist in CNN’s Inside Africa series and had the honor of exhibiting at a World Trade Organization event hosted by Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. Constantly pushing the boundaries of her practice, she actively engages in panel discussions and was a speaker at Africa NXT 2022. Her creative vision has also attracted commissions from leading institutions such as the Goethe-Institut, the Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA Lagos), and Art X Lagos.
Beyond her artistic pursuits, Yadichinma has cultivated a strong interest in creative education, archiving, and interactive experiences. She frequently invites audiences to join her on intellectual journeys, fostering engagement through dialogue and active participation.
Her creative spirit is driven by a fascination with processes and the origins of phenomena. This curiosity shapes her approach to life and the world around her, which she explores with childlike wonder and insatiable inquiry. She firmly believes that objects, no matter how complex, contain their own unique worlds and intricate systems.
